Our second Basic Intermediate Course this year was run over 5 modules from 6 – 10 March 2017 and was funded from the Balwin Charity Walk 2016 – so thank you to Balwin Properties and all who participated! The Course was attended by 16 teachers from 13 different ECD Centres from Sir Lowry’s Pass, Helderberg Basin, Firgrove, Macassar and Mfuleni. We invited a specialist dietitian to discuss the importance of nutrition in the early years and add value to the Course. As all of the attendees are teachers at ECD Centres (i.e. not unemployed women) the Course content was directed at improving their knowledge about the different developmental stages of the children in their care, the importance of purposeful play and how to incorporate holistic learning in their daily programs. They were also provided with extensive opportunities during the week to improve their skills of planning and implementing activities appropriate to the various age groups in their care. 12 of the group have since also gone on to attend our follow up Advanced ECD Course. We will also be visiting these 13 Centres at least four times to ensure implementation of the programme and to give guidance and advice in order for the schools to gain maximum benefit from the training course – ultimately reaching 612 children in these Centres.
